LCAV Co-Sponsored Bill AB 1810 Reaches Critical State Senate Floor Vote - Contact Your Senator Today! |
AB 1810 (Feuer), co-sponsored by LCAV, is currently on the California State Senate floor where it will be voted on later this week. The bill would remove provisions of state law that currently force the Department of Justice to needlessly destroy purchase records for long guns (rifles and shotguns). AB 1810 is necessary because of the significant role that long guns play in our gun violence epidemic. Half of the illegally possessed firearms recovered from prohibited persons by the Department of Justice are long guns. Of the 26,682 crime guns recovered in 2009, 11,500 were long guns. Under current law, handgun purchase records are retained indefinitely. These records aid law enforcement in the investigation of gun crimes and help them get guns out of the hands of convicted criminals, including felons and domestic abusers. Long gun record retention would provide similar benefits to law enforcement without adversely impacting law-abiding citizens. AB 1810 is crucial legislation to help law enforcement solve gun crimes and get guns out of the hands of convicted criminals.
