GUNMAN OPEN FIRES, KILLS WIFE, AND INJURES OTHERS

April 27, 2009
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — For more than 55 years, the volunteer actors and stagehands of the Town & Gown Players have entertained patrons in this Southern college town with all manner of productions: Shakespearian classics, Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals and Woody Allen's screwball comedies.

But nothing could prepare them for the real-life tragedy that struck over the weekend.

A gunman, identified by police as University of Georgia marketing professor George Zinkhan, opened fire with two handguns during a reunion picnic for Town & Gown volunteers Saturday outside the Athens Community Theater. Three of the group's members fell dead, including the professor's wife, and two others were injured by shrapnel.

Authorities still don't know the motive for the shooting, and the search for Zinkhan, 57, continued Monday. Police said they had no leads on his whereabouts.

"I've talked to my friends who were there, and they said he was very methodical and went in and just started (shooting)," said Dina Canup, a Town & Gown member since 2001. "It's just unfathomable."

University officials have issued an advisory urging students to remain cautious until Zinkhan is arrested, though police said Monday they don't believe there's any imminent threat to the university.

"We don't feel like the campus is in any danger from Mr. Zinkhan," Athens-Clarke County police Capt. Clarence Holeman said. "He killed the people he wanted to kill."

Meanwhile, the Town & Gown troupe — described by member Jace Gordon as a "second family" — consoled one another and reflected on three slain friends.

Women can play a greater role in reducing the presence of guns which, in many cases, can be turned against them in cases of domestic violence.

President of the Coalition of Gun Control in Canada, Professor Wendy Cukier, who is also Associate Dean of Academics at Ryerson University, has suggested that mothers can be more attentive to their young sons. Click Here To Read More..

Will I Be Next: Video Youth Against Gun Violence

Will I Be Next?" is a film that explores the issue of gun violence. Five established experts and numerous young people were interviewed for their perspective on this complex and incredibly troubling problem. The Field Foundation of Illinois commissioned and funded Free Spirit Media, a non-profit organization that focuses on civic-minded youth media education and production, to lead the production of the film. Students from Free Spirit Media's documentary filmmaking program at North Lawndale College Prep Charter High School developed the themes, conducted the interviews, filmed the images, designed the sound track, and edited the footage. All parties involved in the making of this film are deeply hopeful that "Will I Be Next?" will serve to raise awareness and motivate action against gun violence and the destruction it imposes on society.

Say Y.E.S! to Change!

Youth Empowerment for Safety! Sat & Sun (May 2nd and 3rd)

We are witnessing a change in our nation that is reflected in our community. People are coming together, speaking out and getting involved. This positive energy has the potential to combat negative and destructive trends both in our community and in our culture. People are finally saying they are mad as Hell, they want to be heard and they want to do something about it.

On February 28th, the West Downtown Neighborhood Group brought together a diverse group of Santa Barbarans to protest against violence in our community. They marched on State Street with banners and signs demanding “SAFETY NOW” and “Queremos Paz.” Among the marchers were council members Helene Schneider and Iya Falcone, who addressed the crowd. Organizer Christina Pizarro hopes to keep this energy moving forward proactively to address more than safety concerns in an area that has been historically neglected.

What people need to think about is that for those of us who have the good fortune to live in this area we don’t merely live in a neighborhood; our immediate community extends from Goleta to Carpinteria and what happens in many neighborhoods affects everyone who lives in this community.

With a spirit of community, the Coalition Against Gun Violence is presenting a new event: Y.E.S! Youth Empowerment for Safety: To Inspire Community and Youth Activism for Safety and Non-violence, in collaboration with La Cumbre Jr. High School and Santa Barbara Teen Coalition.
