NASHVILLE - Legislation that creates a procedure for individuals subject to an order of protection for domestic violence to surrender their weapons is headed for a vote on the House floor.
The measure sponsored by Republican Rep. Beth Harwell of Nashville was unanimously approved today on a voice vote by the House Finance Committee and will now be scheduled for a vote by the full House.
The companion bill passed the Senate the day before.
Under current law, there is no procedure for respondents to surrender weapons while the order is in effect.
This bill would establish a procedure that includes giving them 48 hours to hand the weapons over to a third party not prohibited from possessing firearms.
More details as they develop online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.
